Gardening

Vertical Garden workshop today – and check out our whole Summer Series!

Hi Forklift Fans – we’ve got a great workshop this afternoon at Community Forklift.  But if you can’t make it, we’ve got more workshops later this summer.  They’re all free, too!  Here’s the full schedule:

How to Construct a Vertical Garden

Presenter: Niraj Ray from Millennial Farmers

TODAY!  June 28th

2-3pm

In this workshop, you will learn how to construct a vertical edible garden (VEG) tower using partially salvaged materials as the structure for the tower. In these towers, you can grow greens, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans etc. (just about anything except for trees and root crops). Vertical systems like the VEG tower, help capitalize on resources, saving space and minimizing the use of water, fertilizer and pesticides. A 10 foot row of vertical towers can grow as much produces as a 500 sq ft traditional, in-ground garden over a season.

Green Ideas for Daily Living

Presenter: TANYA DeKona, M.S., Occupational Therapist from the “The Green Elf”

July 19th

2pm

You shop at Community Forklift because you care about reusing materials, saving money, and reducing your impact on the earth.

What if you could improve your quality of life, reduce your bills, and live lightly on the earth in daily living, make your lifestyle very “green?”

Through this interactive and lively event, you will learn practical ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in daily life, key decisions that affect the planet and your money.

You will begin to think more deeply about how to integrate the 3 R’s– Reduce, Reuse and Recycle into your daily life by considering:

  • what you bring into your home (Reduce),
  • what you use in daily life (Reuse), and
  • what you discard (Recycle),

You are also invited to bring along objects (or photos of objects) that you’ve been keeping because you just don’t know what to do with them. We will brainstorm about possibilities, even trade objects within the group!

If you leave wanting to learn more about how to integrate the “3 R’s” into your own home and community, “the Green Elf” does home visits. A “green lifestyle” audit is an opportunity to discuss your needs on site and empower you to live the “green” lifestyle that you want.

You can reach your local elf, “The Green Elf,” via her business phone: (301) 385-3619.

Making & Using Your Own Chalk Style Paint

**** Note: This is a hands on workshop

Presenter: Sue Mondeel from Shabadaba Chic

August 23rd
2-3pm

At Shabadaba Chic, we are all about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling! There are many varieties of chalk style paints available today which make it easy for painting novices to tackle their own furniture facelifts, but the price tag can be daunting. The beauty of chalk based paint is its ability to adhere to almost any surface and to create customized weathered looks.

We will show you how to take any latex paint you find, either in your own basement or on the shelves at Community Forklift and mix up your own chalk based paint.

We’ll show you how to measure it, mix it, paint it, layer it and weather it too.

Bring some paint and a small furniture item such as a stool, side table, chair, or any other metal or wood item that you would like to transform.

Do you know a nonprofit in need of metal trash cans? (could be turned into planters!)

Old Metal Trash Cans @ Wabash compressedHi Forklift Fans –

We recently heard from a commercial property company looking to donate 2,000 gently-used office trash cans.  We don’t have space to take them all, so the company is hoping to donate to other nonprofits, schools, or community organizations who could use large amounts of them.  They are nice and sturdy, and could be repurposed creatively (perhaps as planters or stools?)

Your organization would need to pick them up from 6100 Wabash Ave, in Baltimore, MD.  To arrange for pickup, DO NOT REPLY TO THIS POST.  Instead, please contact Barbara Fonseca at bfonseca(at)greatforest.com or 240-994-7485.  Thanks!
